FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
PRACTICE TIMES
PRACTICE BEGINS AT 3:35PM ON MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, AND FRIDAY, AND 2:35 ON THURSDAY. PRACTICE WILL LAST ABOUT TWO HOURS AND BE OVER BY 5:45.
MISSED PRACTICES
Appropriate reasons to miss practice: School activities (band concert, field trip, college visit, etc…), family emergency, illness (not in school), family trips.
Unacceptable reasons to miss practice: Homework or tests (you can arrange to come late to practice, but you must come), routine doctor or dentist appointments (when possible, do not schedule these during practice times), feeling poorly but came to school (if need be, we will modify the workout)- you still need to report to practice, injuries (you need to come to practice and do whatever type of workout you are able to do), club sports (If you are involved in club sports you must discuss conflicts with Coach Graf or Coach Mittman prior to the start of the season), intramural sports (don’t miss a practice or meet because of intramural sports).
LETTERING POLICYFor all awards, you must attend 90% of all practices and meets, and show excellent effort, and improvement.
For Varsity awards, you must satisfy one of the following:
STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE
100: 13.3 OPEN, OR 51.5 4X1, OR 1:55.0 SPRINT MED
200: 27.5 OPEN, OR 1:55.0 SPRINT MED, OR 1:51 4X2
400: 62.5 OPEN OR RELAY
800: 2:30 OPEN OR RELAY
1500: 5:15
3000: 11:30
100H: 16.5, OR 1:10 SHUTTLE HURDLE RELAY
400H: 1:11.0
SHOT PUT: 34 FEET
DISCUS: 105 FEET
LONG JUMP: 16 FEET
HIGH JUMP: 5 FEET
We are establishing these standards for three reasons. First, we want to reward all athletes who achieve excellence, even if they aren't on varsity. Second, we want everyone to have a goal. You may never win a state championship or run at state, but you can shoot for these goals. Third, we want City Girls Track & Field to be about excellence, year after year. If we reach a point where all varsity runners and many JV reach these standards, we will be among the best in the state every year.
These standards were determined by looking at State Qualifying standards over the last few years and by discussion among the coaches. In most cases, these standards are roughly equivalent to what it would take to qualify for the State Meet.
TEAM EXPECTATIONS
WILL BE COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE
CARES FOR ALL MEMBERS OF THE TEAM.
At meets, we want everyone cheering for each City High athlete who is competing, up until the final event. If they are not competing in, warming up for, or cooling down from an event, they should be cheering on teammates. In many cases they can cheer while warming up or cooling down.

TEAM EXPECTATIONS
- BE A TEAM. Track and Field is a physically and mentally demanding sport. In order for us to be successful, from the first day of practice on, the girls need to be an individual on this team who:
WILL BE COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE
CARES FOR ALL MEMBERS OF THE TEAM.
At meets, we want everyone cheering for each City High athlete who is competing, up until the final event. If they are not competing in, warming up for, or cooling down from an event, they should be cheering on teammates. In many cases they can cheer while warming up or cooling down.
- TRAIN HARD-RACE HARD. We expect girls to give their best effort at all times. Our program is designed to prepare athletes for competition with a mixture of stretching, running, lifting, resting, and discussing mental toughness. We won’t evaluate them on “success”, but on the effort they put forth towards improvement. They will only get the results they want by putting in the hard work. Girls will need to be disciplined and dedicated, and there will be sacrifices that will need to be made.
- BE RESPECTFUL. Conduct themselves with honesty and integrity at all times. Teammates, coaches, meet officials, and girls from opposing teams all deserve their respect; they, in turn, should expect the same respect from their teammates and coaches. As a member of an athletic team they are in the spotlight more than a member of the regular student body, and everyone is watching them. Disrespectful and negative behavior from anyone is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. They will be held accountable for their behavior and choices made at practice and at meets.
- FOLLOW HIGH STANDARDS IN CLASS. Girls need to work diligently on their schoolwork. Their performance at practices and meets is as important as their performance in the classroom. If they are failing classes they may possibly have to miss meets.
- TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Drugs, tobacco, and alcohol will harm girls and their performance, and not to mention, make them ineligible to compete. Eat right, get proper sleep, and drink plenty of water.
- HAVE FUN! An important aspect of making a team successful is to make it enjoyable for each other. We encourage girls to bring their positive attitude as it will rub off on others. We want them to think of things we can do as a team to make our hard work more fun and exciting, and allow each team member to contribute to our fun team environment.
